Today we drove further into South
Dakota and will now spend 2 nights just down the road from Mt.
Rushmore. On the way here today we visited a Lewis and Clark
Interpretive Center and then the Badlands National Park.
Lewis and Clark on their famous voyage
to the Pacific ocean and back stopped in Chamberlain, SD on the
journeys to and from the Pacific. The rest stop on I90 at Chamberlain
has an Interpretive Center that goes into great detail about the trip
that Lewis and Clark undertook. The most startling fact was that the
men ate up to NINE pounds of meat a day! They had to kill game as
they traveled and also traded with the Indians for grain.

The drive to the Badlands is over the
high plains/prairies and in this vast expanse of flat land it seems
that you can see forever.
The Badlands were created starting
around 500,000 years ago, you can see exposed layers that stretch
back 10's of millions of years. It is truly an amazing place to be.
We will be staying 2 nights at the Powder House Lodge, just 4 miles from Mt. Rushmore. Tomorrow we see all the sights that the Black Hills of South Dakota have to offer.
