Day 4, Thursday September 5, 2013

Today we drove from Montague to Petoskey, via Ludington, Manistee, Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore, and Traverse City.

We just drove through Ludington, but it looked a very attractive town. We stopped in Manistee to take a photo of the SS City of Milwaukee, a retired car ferry, that is now on the National Register of Historic Sites, and to buy some food for a picnic lunch.

Then onto Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The countyside today was much more interesting, finally some hills!

Sleeping Bear Dunes is an area of sand dunes created from sand blown across Lake Michigan from Wisconsin. The dunes tower 450 feet above the lake, awesome views and a really interesting place to visit. We saw people who had descended the dunes to walk along the beach, which with the color of the water looked like something out of the Caribbean! We saw a couple of guys struggling to climb back up the dune, must have taken them almost an hour to get back up!

After all that excitement we had our picnic lunch and then we set off for Petoskey by way of Traverse City. Traverse City sits at the base of two large bays and has an amazing waterfront aspect. On arriving in Petoskey, we found our hotel the Bay Inn had a great view of Lake Michigan so we had a cup of tea sitting outside admiring the view. For dinner we ate at a local tavern and drove through a part of town where all the homes are Victorian. It's actually a Methodist camp from the late 18th century, a Chautauqua. There are about 450 cottages there, really homes! On the way back from dinner drove through the Gaslight section of town, looks really nice and we could see why this would be a popular vacation resort for Michiganers.
