Day 6 - Along The Way

The 43 miles of coast from Bandon north to Florence contains the largest and most extensive collection of ocean front dunes in the world, or so says the guide book; no photo will do them justice, so therefore no photo!

At Coos Bay we detoured to Cape Arago State Park and at the Simpson’s Reef overlook were deafened by the herds of seals on the rocks below.

Farther north we stopped at the Oregon Dunes overlook where they have built wooden platforms at various levels so that you can get a good overview of the dunes; unfortunately, the fog hadn’t lifted and we could not get the full effect, we could hear the ocean which was over one mile away over the dunes which are as high as 500 ft in some places! The dunes are the result of 12,000 years of erosion of the volcanoes in the Cascades range.

Lunch today was in Florence, where we were hoping to eat at the Lovejoy Tea Rooms, an English themed restaurant, but wouldn’t you know it was closed on Mondays!

We stopped at a number of waysides along the way…

Tokatee Klotchman, where the sun decided to shine for about 5 minutes,
