Day 3

Slept well and woke around 7am local time, 10am EDT. Left hotel around 9:30am and our first stop was the Guenoc Winery in Middleton. We had not realized just how many wineries there are in CA, they are EVERYWHERE! You could taste yourself into oblivion here! The drive to Middleton was beautiful, the countryside is very hilly and looks amazing with the golden grass and green trees in contrast.

At the winery we were treated to the reserve wines and really enjoyed the Lake County Sauvignon Blanc and the Lake County Petite-Sirah, and bought a bottle of each to take to Brian & Jackie’s in Portland.

Here’s a picture of Jill at the winery….

We had lunch at Granzella’s in Williams, a hopping joint in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Jill spoke to another lady while waiting in line for the restroom and it seems that people go out of their way to eat there. Williams in in the Central Valley of California and the contrast between the valley and the coastal range is huge and happens almost in an instant, one moment the land is hilly and golden and then the land is flat and green.

After lunch we carried onto Redding and check-in to the hotel around 3:30pm and then went for a walk down to the Sacramento River. We walked to Turtle Bay Park where there is an amazing bridge designed by the Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava. Because of its design the bridge is called the Sundial Bridge, here’s a picture…
