First of all a warm welcome to our new readers from Australia!!
Beautiful morning, but very cold; it’s only 36F! We thought that we’d get a jump on the day so Jill & I went down into Copper Center to get gas while Gavin & Helen finished the breakfast, only to find that the only gas station in town doesn’t open until 10am!
So, later we set off north to Fairbanks and stopped 10 miles up the road in Glenallen to get gas. One might ask why you need to buy gas in Alaska ‘cause there’s nowhere to go!
We’d been told to expect a VERY scenic route up to Fairbanks and to be fair while we climbed up into the Alaska Range it was, but once over the top and onto the flatter areas into Fairbanks it got pretty boring; however, before then we did get some further great views of the mountains in the Wrangell Range, Mt. Stanford and Mt. Drum, some distant views of Mt. McKinley (Denali) the tallest mountain in north America and the Alaska Range.
The route to Fairbanks parallels the route of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and we got to stop and touch and feel the pipeline (illegally) at one point.
Struck out on any sort of place for lunch on a 250 miles drive and ended up in a supermarket to get something to eat!
Fairbanks is the 2nd largest city in Alaska tho’ at 30k residents it’s only 1/10 the size of Anchorage, the largest. Didn’t really see anything of the city so can’t say much about it.
We are now at 64 degrees, 50 minutes North, the farthest north we have ever been!
