Day 32 Friday October 4, 2013

An amazing drive today from Topic to Torrey, UT today with a detour down Burr Trail Road and back.
We checked out of the Bed and Breakfast at 11am as we wanted to maximize our time there. We had said goodbye at breakfast to Jim and Claire, an English couple now living in New Zealand with whom we had been drinking beer with after dinner each evening.

Dixie had suggested that we stop at a trail just past the Kiva Coffee Shop and look at the petroglyphs. After we had had a coffee we set off on the trail, but were unable to find the petroglyphs. We realised that whenever Dixie described something as easy it was probably difficult, as she had said you just walk up to the canyon wall, climb would be the word I would use!

US12 must be the most spectacular road in the US, around every corner a new awesome scene awaits you, and we found ourselves pulling over at every scenic lookout. Everyone should travel this road at some time in their life. A one point in the road it is built on the top of a mesa and there is a sheer drop off on BOTH sides of the road, and it's full of curves to boot!

At Boulder we turned off to drive down and then back on Burr Trail Road, another amazingly scenic drive. We were able to find the slot canyon that Dixie had mentioned and walked to the end of it, only a couple of hundred feet, but really interesting. The rock formations along the drive and the sheer canyon cliffs created another highlight for us. We were also lucky enough to see a Coyote (Or is it a Wolf??) and I got some good pics of the animal.

We returned to US12 and then ascended Boulder Mountain which topped out at 9600 ft. It snowed off and on at the top and the views were amazing.

The descent into Torrey revealed wonderful red canyons and reefs and we should see much more of that tomorrow as we drive through Capital Reefs NP on our way to Moab.

Certainly a very varied range of rock formations - needed to have paid more attention to those geology lessons so it was a little clearer how they all came about
