Woke up to better weather this morning
and the sun did manage to break through the clouds though it did
remain on the cool side. We ran a couple of errands in the morning
before checking out of the hotel and getting our car service to take
us to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Our driver thought that someone
had been playing a trick on him as the garage that he drives out of
is on the same street as the cruise terminal, so he was pleased to
see us waiting for him when he arrived at our hotel!
The boarding process as Brooklyn leaves
a lot to be desired as we waited almost an hour after check-in in a
large barn like structure before having to queue once again for a
photo opportunity, which we declined!
Our cabin is on deck 6, midships and we
have what's called a protected balcony. I guess that she can
experience some fairly high seas at times and the balconies on the
lower decks don't have glass for that reason. The balcony almost
looks like a large window set into the steel hull, but we can sit
outside, get some fresh air and if we stand have a good view.
After the obligatory safety drill we
set sail at about 5:30pm so we opened the complimentary champagne and
toasted New York. The highlight of the departure from New York is
passing under the Verazzano Straits Bridge as the QM2 only has about
8 feet of clearance! Just hope that she doesn't leave during a very
high tide!
We met our dining companions for the
cruise at diner, Jack and Goula from Toronto, they also have a place
in Florida. We had a pleasant evening with them and they will make
good company during dinner for the passage to Hamburg.
We now settle down for the passage and
I'll summarize the rest of the crossing when we get to Southampton
and then Hamburg.
Here's some pics of the view from our hotel and as the QM2 leaves NY under the bridge.
