Off to Fanning Island - Not!

Monday April 11, 2016; Day at Sea

We’re now on our way to Fanning Island. Spent a leisurely day attending a couple of talks on the next ports of call and an interesting talk about 3 famous Hawaiian people. The King that united the islands into a single nation in the 19th century, quite a bloody affair! Duke, a prodigous Olympic swimmer and the person who introduced the western world to surfing. Finally, Rodgers the first aviator to fly almost non-stop from California to Hawai’i. Actually, he only made it to 200 miles from Hawai’i where he landed his sea plane in the ocean, he then sailed the plane the final 200 miles!!

Tuesday April 12, 2016 -> Wednesday April 13, 2016; Day at Sea

Well this is the case of the disappearing day as we crossed the International Date Line overnight and instead of waking up on Tuesday morning we awoke on Wednesday morning instead!!! Just hope that there wasn’t anybody on board who were getting ready to celebrate a birthday or anniversary today!

Another leisurely day with an interesting talk about the HMS Bounty’s trip to Tahiti and the trials and tribulations of Captain Blight. Can’t imagine trying to travel half way round the world in an 84 ft boat with a 24 ft beam! And then after the mutiny Bligh sailed a lifeboat for 3,000 miles with 19 crew and did not lose a single soul, very impressive. The mutiny did not end well for the mutineers, they were either caught and executed or killed by their Tahitian companions whilst hiding on Pitcairn.

Thursday April 14, 2016; Another Day at Sea

Well, we were supposed to spend the day at Fanning Island, but due to very squally weather when we arrived the Captain regrettably had to cancel the stop due to safety concerns in tendering passengers onto the island. I am sure that the Islanders were also very disappointed as they have so few visitors each year! It must have also been very disappointing for one of the passengers who is a descendent of Captain Fanning of the US Navy who gave the Island its name!

So we continue steaming south towards the Cook Islands, perhaps we’ll be able to find an extra port of call or an extra day at our next stop in Rarotonga. Along the way we should get back a day as we recross the International Date Line.

We’ll also cross the Equator today, so not sure if we’ll have a ceremony or whether their schedule has been thrown into disarray with the changes today. I’ll keep you posted!
